Training the Performance Horse

The AEBC training system is based on providing clear and consistent signals/responses to reduce the horse's anxiety levels and optimise the desired learning. The goal is to train the horse to be completely obedient to light aids in a relaxed and cooperative manner.

This approach, to train the horse to respond but also maintain his own carriage, is applied in every aspect of training, for horses at all levels of advancement. However, compared to other forms of horse training, performance horses need to be much more responsive in terms of speed and power variations.

Training for dressage and performance is refined in our indoor and outdoor dressage arenas, focusing on immediate responses from a relaxed horse. The horse is trained in all gaits and to work in straight lines and circles. The basics are also applied to a range of different situations including our cross country course and obstacles such as bridges, arches, narrow spaces and water.

The AEBC team are all experienced competitors and coaches across the full spectrum of equestrian events. With expertise at the highest levels, the AEBC has a high profile at the top level of riding, training and education.

Andrew and Manuela McLean are well known competitors on the global circuit, as are Warwick McLean and Charlot Dekkers. Elsa Willans-Davis is a popular teacher and accomplished trainer.

Andrew McLean is regularly invited to speak at conferences around the world, where he also conducts practical demonstrations of the AEBC training system.
